How do you make the post excerpt longer?

Hi..again. I'm trying to make the post excerpt longer. I tried adding the in the html version of the post but that isn't working. Is there something I can change in the postloop.php to customize the excerpt length? Thank you!!!! Kelli

overkill, on the post page dashboard you will see screen options, click there and make sure excerpt is selected http://screencast.com/t/dKdiH6YB4, then scroll to below the post and you will see an excerpt box, customize as desired http://screencast.com/t/zlw4cj7ii1X this should provide you with the control over the excerpt you need.
