Question

1. Run your site through: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/'>http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ - Save the report 2. Install WP Super Cache and Enable in the plugins settings: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/ 3. Install WP Minify: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-minify/ - Do not use if you've deep integrated with bbPress - You need to exclude the main stylesheet in the plugins settings from being minified; for example: http://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-content/themes/platformbase/style.css?ver=x.x 4. Again, run your site through: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/'>http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ - Compare the results with the first to see improvements Final Notes: - WP Super Cache get's better the longer it's used. - Slow speeds can also be caused by too many plugins, hosting storage/bandwidth limitations or a poor host in general, slow internet/computer speeds, heavy graphics files and Flash, poor markup and customizations - check for errors: HTML: http://validator.w3.org/ CSS: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ - Look for more tips elsewhere: http://www.google.com/search?as_q=speed+up+wordpress and be sure to share your own experiences and enhancement tips below. Hi Bryan, Thanks but I still don't understand. Under the settings for the plugin (WP minify) I see a list of plugin files on the side. How do I "edit" the plug-in so the main style sheet is not included? Can you talk me through in told layman's terms (as I am one)? Thanks! Emily

Sure, when you activate WP Minify, you'll find it's settings under: Settings > WP Minify You'll then see a CSS Exclusion field/textarea - drop the URL to your main stylesheet there. In some cases, you'll simply just need to exclude CSS from being minified altogether. Thanks, Bryan

ARGH! I did this, and now I've lost all of the custom CSS that I created. How do I get this back, or exclude the Custom CSS I created from also being minified??

Yeah, also when you're really having a tough time you can always just exclude CSS from minification altogether. So, have you noticed better load times? Also, for anyone else following along, you can't actually lose your CSS or mess it up, it can just be cut off from propagating if the WP Minify settings aren't right. Thanks, Bryan

I had to disable both pug ins because they changed my site (the menus drop downs no longer worked, and my home page was all wierd, and my flash elements disappeared) and yes i excluded the css in minify please help, its so slow i can t even edit it in wordpress www.coloradorafting.com/test

You do have a lot of unnecessary scripts being added e.g. all the UI scripts in the footer loaded with thickbox are already included in the WP core: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script#Default_scripts_included_with_WordPress You should consolidate those. Of course Flash is also going to slow you down because that has to load before the page is all set. Also, just in case you aren't on the most recent version...do so because we consolidated some css files in a recent update.

Hi there, I have some questions, Hope you can help me my web is too slow. I am not an expert in code. 1. I applied the procedure indicated in the beginning but i just found the file: http://www.lacasarojas.com/wp-content/themes/platformbase/style.css I didn't find anything like ....themes/platformbase/style.css?ver=x.x (with the version) . Am I using the right file? 2. I am using Buddypress and multisite http://www.lacasarojas.com . I am using platformbase in the main web. The others have http://www.lacasarojas.com/podcast , http://www.lacasarojas.com/community ,etc are using platformpro (I read in other part of the forum that the child them should be activated only in the main site) When I activated the plugin WP-minify I activated for the network, but when I put the file http://www.lacasarojas.com/wp-content/themes/platformpro/style.css that site was a mess. I have disable the option "Enable CSS Minification" Should be another file CSS?, should this only be done on the main site (root), should I use child theme in all sites? 3. I run CSS: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ as a recommendation indicated in the beginning of this entry. I found a lots of errors (see pic) bky5k.jpg. it seems that comes form the template. Is this the way it should look? The template is great but sometimes seems too complicated. Please advice! Luis

1. Yes you are. That's just some extra stuff the Inspector is telling you about it. 2. I've never found automatic CSS minification to work well in any case, any theme. I would just avoid it, honestly. 3. All these "errors" are actually CSS3 features that have not been accepted into the W3C standard yet, but are in use by many browsers and hundreds of thousands of websites. Don't get too caught up on validating your site perfectly, its nothing more than a tool to help you spot errors that are causing your site to get messed up. Google provides no SEO penalty for not being "valid" (if you don't believe me, type google.com into the validator.)

@Jimmy: Are you sure on the fact about Google and valid code. Tests have indicated that Google prefer the valid one of two identical documents. Its a minor issue though. Page speed though is a major issue, and as Pagelines themes with several plugins have many script and css files to download it will be wise to download many of these from a CDN. CSS should be in one optimized file imho.

I did hear that on a Google presentation somewhere, directly from the search developers. If tests say otherwise, then its something worth looking into. Do you remember where you saw those test results? Were they recent?

The test wasn`t scientific and as you correctly says, Matt Cutts of Google has said validation does not boost PR.
