DMS 2 Blog Template with Custom Post Types

Question

Posted · Report post

I am working on developing a research center for my charity's website (www.opfistula.org).  We will define a custom post type for the research papers we include.  I was hoping to use the blog template to display these custom post types. But I am not sure how to get the custom post types to display or how to get the sidebar information in the blog template (popular, recent, comments, tags) to link to the custom post type I have created.  It seems to be linking to the normal post types, which I am using for our blog page.

The Research Center: http://www.opfistula.org/fistula-research-center/

The blog: http://www.opfistula.org/blog/

Can you guys help?

Hi,

When you create a custom post type, it should automatically create an archive for all your custom post type posts. Which you can verify by going to your post types name for example:

http://www.mysite.com/movies/ - movies being the post type.

In regards to the Sidebar when you say popular, recent, comments and tag are you referring to the RapidTabs section ? If so, this does appear to only support the Posts post type. I will report this to our tracker on your behalf.

Thanks, Danny.  I have just checked and I don't get the automatically generated archive page for my 'research' post type. (http://www.opfistula.org/research/)  In fact, I don't get any archive pages for any of my post types.  I am using Custom Post Type UI version: 0.8.3.

Am I doing something wrong?

I use the same plugin and when I go to /movie there is a list of movie posts that I have created. If this isn't showing for you then you likely have made a mistake when creating your custom post type and/or your permalink structure is screwed up somehow.

Also, have you created any research posts yet ?

Hi Danny,

I have created research posts as well as several other posts types and none of them show up. I don't think I have made any mistakes in making the custom post types, but maybe withe the permalink structure.  Is there something specific that needs to be done there in order to make the archive work?

Can you show me your Custom Post Types UI settings for your research post type via a screenshot please.

Also, when you're viewing the research URL, is the PostLoop section active on that page, try replacing the 404 section with the WP-Content/PostLoop section.

I got the archive page working - it was in the advanced options of the CPTUI.  Looks like it might handle the posts well, but the sidebar is still linked to the blog posts.  Is there anyway to get this sidebar linked to the custom post type. I can do a plugin or widge tif necessary.  Just not sure what would work.

What do you mean the Sidebar is linked to the posts ?  If you want a custom Sidebar with custom widgets only displayed on your Custom Post Type archive page, then you're going to need to create a custom sidebar or use Widget Logic.
