I am having some real speed issues with the site. The strange thing is that sometimes I get speed test results of 4-5s and sometimes its 15-20s plus. I thought it may be something to do with my host but they don't seem to think so.

My host also doesn't support GZip.

I've aggregated minified CSS but doing the same to JS distorts the page so I haven't done it with JS.

I'm using Jetpack's free CDN.

I don't think compressing images would make that much of a difference to the high load times I get frequently.

Is there anything you guys could see that I'm not seeing? Any tips to help imrove the speed of the site?

Using Pingdom's tools you home page returns 8.5mb in size http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/dwRGJa/http://cavistons.com/

You can see a breakdown of items and their load time, server wait etc

There is also a server error repeatedly reported that will need your attention and details of this can be seen on the info above.

You will find a lot of good advice on this forum topic http://forum.pagelines.com/topic/25369-the-quest-for-speed/

Thanks for the advice. Turning on the caching plugin made a big difference.
