DMS 2 DMS2 is loosing content. Again.

Question

Posted · Report post

Danny

I started posting to this old topic until i decided to start a new (THIS) thread:
http://forum.pagelines.com/topic/31642-dms-keeps-deleting-my-content/

We have a completely new issue. It has nothing to do with older posts from us in the forums.

Please read carefully!

Here is my issue description, already sent to the hello@ support:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'm panicked again. We edited a page 2 minutes ago (after editing a lot of other pages these weeks THE SAME WAY without facing problems).

And we lost content again.

We edited a TextBox as normal. Saved. And the content is gone.

Please please help. Our customer's page is now online and i really don't know, what i can do anymore.

The affected page on the TEST SITE is:

http://wordpress.p221541.webspaceconfig.de/angebote/seminare/grundqualifizierung-fuer-betriebsraete-2/modul-2-teilseminar-1/

The affected page on the LIVE site is:

http://procul-akademie.de/angebote/seminare/grundqualifizierung-fuer-betriebsraete-2/modul-2-teilseminar-1/

in addition i searched the database for the affected page/element and the content is also gone in the db (table "pl_data_sections" column "live"):

Another page with the same layout (one TextBox) we edited today looks like:
Modul 2 - Teilseminar 2
h3

Themenplan:

Mitwirkung bei personellen Einzelmaßnahmen

Vorläufige personelle Maßnahmen

Zwangsgeldvorschriften

Zeitplan:

Für das gesamte Seminar wurde eine Regeldauer von 12 Stunden ermittelt. => All content is available.

in addition i've got the following infos:

- i looked at my database backup from today, 9:15 pm

- at 9:15 all content from the affected page was there:

(2186, 'udytju', '
Modul 2 - Teilseminar 1
h3

Themenplan:

- Systematik des Arbeitsrechts
- Rechte des Betriebsrates
- Unternehmens- und Personalplanung
- Mitwirkung bei der betrieblichen Bildung

Zeitplan:

Für das gesamte Seminar wurde eine Regeldauer von 12 Stunden ermittelt. - we edited the page at about 9:30

- we did not do anything else than before. we edited 8 pages - one after another. like every day. but on that one page, we edited this page before without problems, we're loosing content. again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important!!!!!!!

The new Login page can be found under:

http://wordpress.p221541.webspaceconfig.de/wp-admin

The login credentials are the same as sent before in the email.

DO NOT LOGIN at http://procul-akademie.de because this is the live site!
ONLY LOGIN at http://wordpress.p221541.webspaceconfig.de/wp-admin

Because of this being a TEST SITE, you can edit everything and do whatever you want and is needed to solve the issue.

But here comes the next problem:

I backupped my whole page. 1:1 MySQL, 1:1 FTP and pushed it to the test server. But you see what happened:
Every setting is gone. The Homepage, The Logo. All templates are gone.

I really really really don't know what to do anymore.

Please look at the test page, login, update everything, do whatever is needed. Please report back what i can do. I don't have any clue. And i don't have power anymore.

I have already informed you, you need to disable all active plugins and update to the latest version of DMS. That site is currently using DMS 2.0.2, please update that site, make sure all plugins are disabled and let us know if the problem persists.

The issue is likely caused by either one of two things.

1. A plugin(s). Therefore, you will need to disable all active plugins.

2. Server related, but we can come to that if you can recreated the issue with all plugins disabled.

First of all i wanted to show you the malfunction/bug/new issue, that a 1:1 copy of the live website breaks. All settings are lost.

Please note: After updating the DMS2, even more content on the homepage got lost, and ALL Templates, even the default ones are gone. But:

Maybe this will be discussed in a new thread i'll open later, because if even a backup is unreliable.... i can't sleep anymore ;)

Now our real problem/issue

Then i updated wordpress, i updated all plugins, i updated DMS2.

And at the end, i disabled all plugins.

You can now start "the investigation" on this issue. To remember: The issue is (this time) on page

The support is on my problem/issue these minutes.

I think yours is a different issue, in fact maybe the other issue i was talking about above with the update.

How did you lose your content?

Did you lose your content after a DMS update?

I lost my site twice. The first time it was because of the DMS 2.0.7 Update, and/or Wordpress 3.9.1 Update. I am new to Wordpress, and Pagelines, so maybe I'm doing something wrong.

The second time I lost my site was after I was dealing with another problem with double scroll bars in my Media Library. I was asked to turn off all plugins, and turn on Debug mode. I did that, and I also cleared my Chrome browser cache. When I re-logged in to my Pagelines site everything had reverted back to "almost" default. I say that because I was on the DMS2 welcome page, but after re-loading a saved template I had some of my site came back, but it was a very old version. Once again, I am new, and maybe I am doing something wrong.

DO you need to save your site into a template to ensure it is preserved?

I can approve the loss of content when updating either DMS2 or wordpress to 3.9. I did that today and had the same problem.

But i don't want to "pollute" this thread here anymore, because this is another issue.

Could you please create a new topic with your issue and give me a shout when you're done?

I will then approve your issue and write my experiences in the new thread.

I also have screens proving this behavior/loss of content.

cemico - I don't have access to a DMS version 2.0.2 zip, so I am going to have to wait for our developers to provide me with one, if we do indeed have one. However, on one of my test sites, I had version 2.0.3 running. So I create a number templates each with a unique layout, colors, etc.. I then proceeded with the update to DMS 2.0.7.

When the update completed, I returned to my test site and the site was running as intended, the templates remained, as did the layouts and the styling I added. Therefore, I am going to need to use a DMS 2.0.2 zip to perform an accurate test in recreating your issue.

Now our real problem/issue

Then i updated wordpress, i updated all plugins, i updated DMS2.

And at the end, i disabled all plugins.

Can you explain what this means please, I visit that page and couldn't see anything?

Also, as far as I can tell you're using the Flatten child theme, please make DMS the active theme. It is more difficult to assist you when you do not even have DMS active.

Would it be possible that you give me a phone call?

I don't think that we can solve these issues via texting in this forum. It would be best to talk live to each other and work on a solution.

Unfortunately, that isn't a service we provide. Would it be possible for you to record your issue using a free application called Jing - http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

Also, provide the following information please.

* A link to your web host provider and what package/plan you're on.

* Your PHP info - http://codex.wordpress.org/Finding_Server_Info

Lastly, contact our helpdesk with the following information

* A link to this topic so they have a reference

* A link to the site in question

* Enable DMS Debug mode on your site again.

* Disable all active plugins

I did describe my issue in detail here in this thread.

Please read above. The page lost content without doing anything.

I can't reproduce this issue.

What can i do anymore?

You won't let me call you per phone. You don't want to log in to my page and see what's wrong there.

I can't disable all plugins on my site, because the page is live. My customer will freak out.

Would it be possible that i send you a complete backup of my page and you install it at your host to see what's the error about?

What else can i do?

What can you do?

Could you install the copy of your site on another install within your hosting and set the site up exactly the same? Then you can try disabling plugins on your test site?

Personally i think it is ALWAYS worthwhile to have a full copy of your site in a test environment so that you can make changes there without affecting your site before you push to a live site.

Martin.... This is exactly what i did! Please read again the post you wanted to close: http://forum.pagelines.com/topic/35008-lost-content-and-templates-after-11-backups/

I did backup my site 1:1 i installed in an other database. And it doesn't show up right. Templates are gone. Content is gone.

I also set up an admin user for you and sent you the credentials and the info that you are allowed to do everything needed to solve the issues.

Please read again the post you wanted to close: http://forum.pagelines.com/topic/35008-lost-content-and-templates-after-11-backups/

I setup a new 1:1 backup test site for you. This is what i did a few minutes ago:

From the main site http://procul-akademie.de/

- i made an MySQL dump

- copied the wordpress folder

I created a new subomain http://test.procul-akademie.de/

- in a new wordress test folder on the server. the same server!

- i uploaded the copied FTP files to the new wordress test folder

- i imported the MySQL dump in a new test databse on the server. the same server(!)

- i changed all urls in the databse to point to the new http://test.procul-akademie.de/ domain.

Here is the result:

http://test.procul-akademie.de/

- the homepage content is gone

- even the theme has changed to the default

- all templates are lost

You can log in with the credentials i sent you. Please note that you have to login under http://test.procul-akademie.de/wp-admin now!!!!!!

Here are my questions. Please read carefully and try to answer them one by one including the question number:

1. How could it be, that a 1:1 copy/mirroring of the website destroys the DMS' content?

2. How could it be that the theme changed?

3. How could it be that even all templates are gone?

4. What can i do now? How can i rely on DMS? What should i say to my customer?

5. Would it be possible that i send you a complete backup of my page and you install it at your host to see what's it all about?

Please read this post again and try to understand my questions in detail. And please give me answers!

And please please don't write me that i should update anything by now. It's all about i can't copy/backup a page 1:1 (!!!!) and see it 1:1 on a test domain (on the same server!!!!)

The reason as to why myself and other staff members are confused are the exact reason as to why we do not permit users to hijack other topics. You have created two topics regarding the same issue with different information.

For that reason I have locked your other topic to prevent any further confusion - http://forum.pagelines.com/topic/35008-lost-content-and-templates-after-11-backups/

Can you please contact our helpdesk again and provide your SQL file. - hello at pagelines dot com

As far as I can tell without testing your sql file, the issue has been caused by either the following:

1. You have plugins which you're not able to disable due to your site being live. These plugins could well be caused of issue. (FYI, we actually do not provide support to users who refuse to disable all active plugins)

2. The method in which you have backed up/migrated your site, i.e. something went wrong.

3. Your server hasn't been configured correctly.

4. You're using an out of date version of DMS, try updating to the latest version and then try to make a copy.

To move your WordPress site from one server to another, one domain to another or make an exact copy of your site. Here is what I would do.

I wouldn't do a SQL dump, instead I would do the following:

1. Install WordPress on the site I wish to be a copy, for this example lets call this Site2 and the Live site (site you wish to copy) will be called Site1.

2. On Site1, I export all WordPress content using the built-in WordPress import/export tools.

3. I then export all my DMS content (layout/settings/templates etc...) using the built-in Import/export tools.

4. Once I have those two files, I then go to Site2 and make sure WordPress is installed correctly and updated to the latest version.

5. I then install DMS on Site2.

6. I then begin the import process, starting with the WordPress content.

7. Once the WordPress file has been imported, I then proceed with the DMS backup file.

8. Once both files have been imported, my Site2 should look like Site1.

I have followed this process today locally on two separate sites via MAMP and had encountered no problems.

Therefore, can you follow the process above and see if you encounter the same issue please.

If you do, reply here with a link to the test site so we can see the issue first hand.

I've sent my sql file to the helpdesk at hello@. Thank you for that!

But i don't understand the other thing here:

- Why should it not be possible to copy one wordpress site via 1:1 MySQL and 1:1 FTP files to another?

- How should we do this in future? I really need a 1:1 mirror of my wordpress site in an test environment for testing the upgrade process to new plugin/wordpress/theme versions.

It's exactly the thing we need to do!

And it's exactly how i'm doing it for years now.

We can't update our live site, because we need to test if an upgrade fails on a test site.

But the process you are using is installing a fresh and up to date wordpress and then import the content.

That's not the thing we, and any other user, needs.

We have to have a 1:1 mirror of the live site to test the upgrade process, as we will do this exactly on the live site after the upgrade process was ok on the test site.

I open the SQL file in Sublime Text 2 and change the URLs via find and replace.

It should be alright, i do this for years now.

An example for a pagelines serialized entry:

Before "Find And Replace"

"base_url";s:65:"http://procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments"

After "Find And Replace"

"base_url";s:65:"http://test.procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments"

It should be alright, i do this for years now.

An example for a pagelines serialized entry:

Before "Find And Replace"

"base_url";s:65:"http://procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments"

After "Find And Replace"

"base_url";s:65:"http://test.procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments"

There lies your problem, you are doing text replace with serialized data.

This is how it works:

"base_url";s:65:"http://procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments"

data is base_url

base_url is 65 bits long and contains http://test.procul-akademie.de/wp-content/themes/dms/sections/comments

you changed the url but not the bit length, so you basically broke the entire serialized data.

There are various search and replace php scripts available and even a few wp plugins if i remember correctly.

It should be alright, i do this for years now.

Maybe so, but not with serialized data.

Thank you very much for your hint on replacing serialized data.

I replaced the databases content via this tool:

https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

And everything is now up and running on our TEST site:

http://test.procul-akademie.de/

Now, back to the initial problem on this page:

http://test.procul-akademie.de/angebote/seminare/grundqualifizierung-fuer-betriebsraete-2/modul-2-teilseminar-1/

- we edited the page

- we pressed the edit button (pencil) on the TextBox

- we added some Text

- we saved and published

- the page reloaded

- all content from the TextBox was gone in the textarea and on the page itself as you can see at the page:

http://test.procul-akademie.de/angebote/seminare/grundqualifizierung-fuer-betriebsraete-2/modul-2-teilseminar-1/

How is it possible that we lose content every once in a while???

And it's not reproducible.

FYI: We have:

- the latest Wordpress version

- latest DMS2 version

- all plugins in their latest version

- all plugins deactivated

- the flatten theme deactivated

We have had a small minority of users have this problem, but this was related to earlier versions of DMS, if you use the latest version there should be no problem.

If you're using DMS 2.0.7 and are still experiencing issues of sections disappearing then it has to be related to either plugins (if you have any installed), custom scripts or code you may have added or most likely your server configuration.

I have attempted nearly 100 times each time a user has reported an issue of sections or settings disappearing and not once, have I or any of our support team been able to replicate the issue.

Thank you for the info, that other users are also facing this loss of content issue.

By now i did only hear from the PageLines staff, that no other user and no staff member was ever facing this issue. And if there was a loss of content issue, it had been spotted in the years of the DMS.

My question now is:

What should i communicate to my customer, who paid a lot of money for the DMS and it's setup?

Should i say: "Dear customer. You have to live with your website losing content. You can lose all your work every minute. We can't reproduce it. Deal with it. Bye".

Or do you have another idea?

FYI:

We have:

- the latest Wordpress version installed

- the latest DMS2 version

- all plugins in their latest version

- all plugins deactivated (!!!!)

- the flatten theme deactivated
