DMS 2 Firefox and IE rendering problem - Chrome looks fine

Question

Posted · Report post

Can you please take a look at my Post Category page and tell me what to tweak so that Firefox and IE render the page correctly, as Chrome does? Thanks.

http://bwise.wpengine.com/blog/category/b2b/

Site has no custom CSS currently in place.

See screenshots of what I see in Chrome and FF here:

2 problems:

1. As you should see, there is no margin between right sidebar in Firefox and IE - as there is in Chrome.

2. Also, see how the post images (below the top 3, once the right sidebar items end...) take over the full width of the site in Firefox, but remain limited to the single column in Chrome.

Very nice troubleshooting Danny. Problem solved.

By the way, 2 follow up questions:

- What exactly is the forwarding looking plan for that 'Legacy Options' area? Long term, will we have similar options to say, display image tags in excerpts?

- When we now put custom CSS on pages, is it applied 'per page' or site-wide?

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi there

You shouldn't have to tweak anything really, it should display the same across the board. There are some strange caching issues with WPengine so I would say first, try disabling all third party plugins to see if the code inside any of them are overriding one of the classes for the content in those browsers. Remember to flush the cache after disabling the plugins.

If no result, try using the alternate css urls options inside settings > advanced, this was created to try and assist with issues on hosts like wpengine which have additional caching.

Have tried both disabling all plug-ins, flushing cache, setting alternate css urls option to on, and still having the issue of the browsers rendering differently.

Strangely, it's on the Category page, that the behavior occurs, not on the main blog page.

WP Engine has been a fantastic host, and while I know they have some of their own caching going on, it doesn't seem to be that which is causing this.

Any other ideas?

Thanks James.

Hmm, I am not seeing this issue on our demo site when viewing in FireFox. Can you please make sure that there is no custom CSS or scripts being loaded and you have disabled all active plugins.

Also what options are you using for your PostLoop, are you using the legacy options ?

Danny, can you post screenshot of which page / pages you're viewing and how they look in FF? (I'm on Mac version for what it's worth)

  • All plug-ins disabled except: Paglines Pro Tools, Pagelines Updater and Custom Sidebars (https://wordpress.org/plugins/custom-sidebars/)
  • Only custom .CSS is on blog pages to hide header on these pages - the blog has it's own header which lives in the template area above Post Loop.
  • Yes, I have legacy options enabled in Post Loop options and only thing of note is that <IMG> tag is allowed for excerpts.
  • We don't use Featured Images; instead, we like to put our main post image at the top of the actual body of each post so that the excerpt on the main blog page show the image, and position it below the title.

Basically, what I'm seeing on my end is that Firefox (and IE) are allowing images to expand into the right sidebar column area and Chrome is keeping them contained correctly into the specified Post Loop column area, irrespective of their actual size.

.single-post #header {display:none !important; }
.archive #header {display:none !important; }
.blog #header {display:none !important; }
.archive category #header {display:none !important; }

I can see if you issue when viewing on FireFox. However, I am unable to see the same issue when I am viewing the DMS demo. If you're using the Legacy options, then it could be a minor bug.

See if this resolves your issue:

#site .media > .bd {
    display: block;
    width: 100%;
}

If it doesn't let me know, so I can report this to our tracker.
