Banners, Boxes, Branding, Features sections

Question

Posted · Report post

Hi,

Do you plan to make these PageLines Framework sections available in DMS packaged via a sort of "PageLines Legacy Sections" free plugin or separately?

Best regards.

I'm not sure, to be very honest. I think DMS is using alternates.  For example, Flipper is a carousel.  RevSlider is similar to, but better than our older Features, and Grid system replaces boxes (with much more flexibility).  Not sure about Branding, though.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

Actually, my main concern is probably Branding (with social & RSS icons...): atm, I'm using a Hero section in the header, wich is not really appropriate.

I am using the media box for the logo on my site. Pretty standard, but you will need to set the size in the wordpress gallery and then the minimum height of the section to say 20px in the sections settings. That should work as a branding section.

It would be great to have some legacy sections if a client whose site was built using Pagelines wants to upgrade to DMS. A lot of time went into building the individual features, for example, and therefore rebuilding them is going to require a lot of time for the designer/ money for the client. Maybe it's something that could be made available as a special download through the PL site but not included in the store. Therefore, it's only being used when necessary when upgrading sites.

Okay, so, let's sort this out.

To add branding to your header, you're going to do some unusual things.

1. Go to Dashboard > PageLines > Drag & Drop.  In the Header, add the Sections section from Available to Active sections.

Now, in Chrome, using the Visual Editor, add the 2 Column Section to the Header section.  Note: You can use three if you want a three column header.

In the 2 Column section, you'll see two, evenly spaced rectangles.  Click on the one on the left. You'll see <6/12> there.  Click on the left arrow till the number changes to 4/12. Now, click on the rectangle on the right side and use the right pointing arrow to increase the value to 8/12.

Inside the left column, drag the Media Box from Add Sections.

In Media Box, paste the following into the Text and Embed HTML field.

<a class="logo" href="http://www.my-website.com/"><img src="Path To My Image" alt="My Logo"></a>

Get the URL for your branding image.  It's still visible in Dashboard > PageLines > Site Options > Website Setup. You can copy the URL there. If doing this new, you can upload a fresh branding image from the Media Box settings, so you can skip that step.

If you have the URL copied, replace http://www.my-website.com/ with your full URL to the site. Then, paste the code to your image where it says Path To My Image.  We recommend using the site's tagline as the alt, replacing "My Logo".  Publish and reload.

You can add animations and other options via the Media Box.

Now, in the second column, you can add anything you'd like, from ads to text, a customized menu, shortcodes for social media, etc.  You can apply sections, text, content box or other options into that right-side column.

I followed these steps but I am seeing the header area not conforming to the media size. I can't figure out how to make the media box conform to the media size either.

Below is a link as to what I have accomplished in trying to recreate my header from my existing website at http://runneracademy.com

http://screencast.com/t/WYgoIroo

How can I replicate my header from my live site in Framework to DMS?

I'd like to logo as is and then a full width nav bar.

You just might get it to work by pasting the simple css code I did here:

Hi, I'm new to Pagelines and DMS so please bear with me!

When using the iBox section, I'd like to know how you can alter the colour of the background when you mouse over it.  I.E. at the moment it's grey and inverts to black when you mouse over.  How can this be changed and also I've seen on some of the Pagelines sites that they have changed the backgrounds from circles to squares.

I'm guessing I need to create a piece of css and drop this in the code section?

Any offers of help will be appreciated to get me started down the Pagelines road.  Thanks.

Illinimatt81: Are you using Ubermenu or Megamenu on your current site? Just curious. You banner/header presentation is the same that I have on my site, and the menu system reminds me of Ubermenu.

DMS looks interesting, so I purchased the business membership to see if I can extend/redesign my companies site - which I created in Dreamweaver.

I just came across in-progress docs that another moderator wrote here - consistent with what Rob suggests. Except, it seems this result will not accommodate our specific requirements, of having fluid full page menu - which to me don't seem that unusual requirement.

Seems to me that branding is one of the more compelling and important features for websites, I am wondering if the difficulty customizing such, especially when DMS is supposed to cut down on custom coding, is just a temporary oversight, or does it reflect a fundamental limitation?  I fully expect to produce custom coding, but for areas that are far more esoteric and unique to my needs, not core sections that everyone depends on.

While the documentation is decent - it would be helpful to have more basic tutorials, videos. I would suggest they screen for some newbies (like me  :)  ) that haven't used Pagelines, so that this class of user could give them better feedback on where attention should be focused on the doc/support side.

barkingsheltie Yes I am using Ubermenu. My live site is still running Framework 2.4.4. I have a copy of DMS on my local host and I can't create the branding and it appears Ubermenu is not compatible with DMS so I am sticking with Framework until the branding section is added back.

Hi,

I recreated a Framework Banner by inserting a DMS MediaBox (component section) + a DMS TextBox (component section) inside a DMS "2 Columns - Split" (layout section).

Then I clone (pro DMS feature) or start afresh (it's pretty fast), and that's all folks: it takes me two minutes (max) for each.

Do you think we will really need the old Banners which will be included in the legacy plugin ;) ?

@illinimatt81, I've been trying to get UberMenu to work with DMS too, but no joy. If you figure out how to do it, I'd be all ears. I'm going to have to go for another theming solution if I can't get this to work, unfortunately.

I have opened a forum topic on UberMenu's site and their developer is looking into DMS this weekend (per an email from him).  I use it on my site too, and want it to work in DMS.

I know many of you are concerned about these components.  Let me point out that in DMS, there's a workaround, but a little creativity and imagination, not to mention review of the docs will get you going.   I was upset that iBox is limited to 4 columns, and doesn't have an image upload utility.  So, I went right back to a simple solution to get 6 columns with linked images, linked title and a blurb.  I used the grid system in a text box.  Darn easy. I had it up and running in less than 3 minutes.  The basic code is in http://demo.pagelines.me/tools

Banners are easy,  Branding took a moment or two, but was resolved fast enough.  The only thing I see as being a continued issue is Features, which I'm asking our developers to work on.  Hopefully, some developer out there will catch on to this and create a DMS ready slider that will create slides based on posts in a category (my own wish, but one that seems shared).

In a worst case scenario, there are plenty of plugins that are either free or premium that will work in DMS.

Meanwhile, if things aren't working right, just go back to Framework till all your issues are resolved.

+ 1 and thanks A LOT for all the tips/tricks/ideas/explanations @Rob!

Just hope the devs will solve the issue (already posted by me on GitHub at Danny's request) with the MediaBox not height responsive to an image, even though we of course can deal with it with CSS in the meantime ;)

Best regards.

Rob, thanks for following up to find a solution for UberMenu. I'm following both this and the the thread over on UberMenu support forum. :)

No problem.  I've just sent Chris (their founder), access to the legacy sections and base theme, so he'll have the tools he needs.

I'm also forwarding his reply to our developers.
