I am using the grid — that's why I wanted the shorcode to insert into a span so my clients wouldn't get lost in the gid's code - which can be a little flakey if you don't know what you're doing.

Why not cheat your way through life.
I love boxes but I often find the layouts are non congruent for my requirements.
So I create the boxes as I like, then rip the code and paste this where I require it.
Here is how I do this.
You can create the boxes that you require then add the boxes to a draft page.
Now view the page.
Right click the page using your modern browser
Select view source.
Use the browser find feature (Ctrl -f) and search for the comment text - <!-- Boxes | Section Template -->
Select and copy everything in between this up to and including the folowing tag </selection>
<!-- Boxes | Section Template -->
Paste this code selection inline with your normal content as required.
View page, smile then pat your self on the back.
N.B. You may need to remove the comment line <!-- Boxes | Section Template -->.
I Hope this helps.
