I'm not sure of the purpose of your request, but full-width is potentially problematic with some browsers and particularly with mobile views, such as iPad, iPhone, Android and other devices.
There is, I believe a 1230px limit (could be wrong about the number) that is set in Dashboard > PageLines > Site Options > Layout Editor. However, you can select "Full Width Sections' under "Site Design Mode "
Elements you want going to the maximum width can be set using Dashboard > PageLines > Drag & Drop by adding them in Page Templates (full width). The Content Area is where the sidebars will also appear if selected.
I use a full width image background that goes from edge to edge in any browser. With Full Width Sections selected, I simply add my background image and it goes full width. Setting background colors via Color Control also goes edge to edge with that mode, no matter how wide the canvas area is set in Layout Editor.
Using Firebug (
) you can find the full-width element and apply color changes there. An example of this would be our default Twitter bar.
