To successfully transition between hosts don't forget to not only modify the exported database (e.g. in terms of replacing localhost:8888 instances to your new http-less URL) but also export&import Pagelines settings in the "account" pane.

It all seems to work except that my widgets inside the sidebars, which end up all mixed up - more precisely widgets from primary sidebar change to footer widgets (same order), secondary SB widgets go to morefooter.... etc.... - bizzare! Any suggestions?

That's a known but incredibly simple issue. Just go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets and select the various sidebars you're using. Simply drag the widgets up and down to their proper place (WITHOUT dragging to the left). This preserves the settings you have in the widgets. If you drag the widgets left to the main Widget area, the settings will be lost.
